The Food and Drug Administration has approved Viagra (sildenafil) for use in men between the ages of 18 and 64, the drug’s manufacturer, Pfizer, announced Monday.

Johnson also added that a review of more than 60 clinical trials has shown no statistically significant difference between the treatment and control groups for the drug.
Pfizer’s regulatory approval of Viagra came just two months after the FDA’s approval of the drug’s generic equivalent, the generic drug, for erectile dysfunction.
The drug is the generic of Pfizer’s erectile dysfunction drug, which has been on the market for more than a decade.
According to a statement from Pfizer, the drug’s generic version is the same as the branded drug. It is available in generic form and is used only in men who are experiencing erectile dysfunction.
The FDA will continue to review the drug’s safety and efficacy as it assesses its long-term safety and efficacy in treating ED.
The agency also has the option to continue approving generic versions of Viagra after the FDA’s approval of its drug, the drug’s generic version, for a period of up to six years.
“The continued approval of Viagra will enable physicians to offer patients more cost-effective treatment options,” said Dr. John H. R. McGinley, a division head for Urology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
McGinley added that the FDA has been able to determine if the drug is as safe or effective as expected.
“Our analysis of the safety and efficacy of Viagra in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men has shown no statistically significant difference between the treatment and control groups,” McGinley said in a written statement.
In addition, the FDA’s review of more than 60 clinical trials has shown that the drug’s efficacy and safety in treating ED in men have not been evaluated.
